Plastic Film Instead of Paint
First GM used the thermoformed color plastic on the stone shield on it's Chevrolet SSR pickup. Now they are using it on the Chevrolet HHR wagon. Also they are making the rocker panels form the plastic for some models of Buick and Cadillac. This year, GMC Envoy is going to have a thermoformed plastic bumper fascia. Charles Buehler, a technical integration engineer in GMÂs materials group says there is not much change for the collision repairers. If these parts have scratches in them, they just need to be sanded down, filled and painted, just like regular parts.
One of the reasons of introducing these parts is the durability. This plastic is better at withstanding stone impingement and impact damage.
